The Left Right Think-Tank and the U.S. Consulate held a roundtable discussion with Joseph Cirincione, President of the Ploughshares Fund on September 10 in Melbourne.

The discussion was based around nuclear proliferation and international relations, and priority was given to Left Right members wishing to attend.

Ben Gielewski attended the event.
“When we got in to the consulate we were given a quick tour before heading to a room where we met Joe Cirincione. Joe is the President of Ploughshares fund, an organization focused on nuclear disarmament as well as having written books on nuclear disarmament. Joe was really friendly and answered all of our questions in detail. He had some interesting anecdotes about the Cold War, owing to his work for Ronald Reagan in the 1980s, as well as an up-to date and comprehensive understanding of the nuclear programs of Iran, Israel, Russia and US. I found our discussion about the USSR and US talks at Reykjavik particularly interesting. Mr Cirincione told us that whilst both Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev agreed that both superpowers should disarm their nuclear arsenals, the inability of the Unites States to see their defensive nuclear shield in Europe as potentially threatening to the USSR combined with the USSR military’s ideological adherence to Realpolitik that caused the talks to breakdown. It highlighted that broad political consensus is needed to be able to make real change work”.
